Past Races

Altona Coastal Park had a previous life as Williamstown Racecourse. Horse racing took place here from 1868 until it was used as an Army camp during the second world war. Then in 1947 a suspicious  fire burned down the grandstand and the racecourse was no more. All that remains are some paths around the course, some gates and this section of grandstand.

  1. SAD TO SAY: Many of monuments of Our History, in the States, are crumbling do to neglect. Let’s face it, the economy is not what it use to be and the Federal Government cannot absorb the maintenance cost. We have had our share here in Louisiana. Our Chalmette Cemetery along with The Chalmette Battlefield located in Jean Lafitte National Historical Park is fighting erosion with every rain storm as is all of our past forts that were used to protect this great country. It won’t be long until until the Gulf claims the rest. In the mean time, “Laissez les bons temps rouler” I keep thinking, Veni, Vidi, Vici and then Nature put us in our place and kicked us out.
