Fremantle World Heritage

Fremantle Prison, built by convict labour between 1851 and 1859, remained open until 1991. Now a UNESCO world heritage site, there are a number of tours available to view the site, including a night torchlight tour. Several of the former prison buildings have been repurposed since its closure.

Fremantle Youth Hostel (YHA) is housed in the former women’s prison, and you can stay in a cell for a reasonable price! Although we opted for a newly built ensuite room.
